What is Recovery from Dental Implants Like?

Our smile is part of our identity, and not just because our teeth have important functions for chewing and speaking. So the loss of a tooth can be somewhat traumatic. Having dental implants to replace lost teeth does not have to be equally traumatic. Dr. Amin Samadian sees his patients through the process by focusing on the most pleasing outcome with the least possible discomfort.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Whatever the reason you’re missing a tooth—accident, injury, or a dental health issue—dental implants are a fantastic way to repair your teeth so your smile doesn’t miss a beat. Dental implants look and feel exactly like natural teeth, and you care for them the same way. Once Dr. Samadian completes your treatment, your smile will be as natural as it’s always been, and your jawbone near the missing tooth is preserved. Lost teeth can lead to bone resorption, which can impact the chances of receiving dental implants, and can affect the alignment of the bite and placement of adjacent teeth. Missing teeth can even cause TMJ disorders.

Dental implants closely mimic roots and natural teeth. A titanium “root” is surgically placed in the upper or lower jawbone, and a post is attached to the artificial root. During a 2-6 month healing process, the root integrates with the jawbone, and gum tissues grow around the post. (In some cases, the post must be affixed to the root in a separate procedure.) Then a customized crown that looks as realistic as your other teeth is attached to the healed post and your smile is restored.

Dental implants:

  • Replace lost teeth
  • Preserve bone and alignment of adjacent teeth
  • Treat joint pain
  • Restore facial tissues and your smile
  • Improve chewing, digestion, and speech
  • Securely anchor bridges or dentures

Am I a Good Candidate?

There are a lot of considerations for candidacy for dental implants, so a consultation is the best place to start. Dr. Samadian uses the Cone Beam CT scan to evaluate your nerves, sinuses, bone density, and bone width and height to determine if you require bone building through sinus elevation or bone augmentations before dental implants can be considered.

What’s the Procedure Like?

To ensure the placement of your dental implant is as precise as possible, Dr. Samadian uses XGuide navigational implant placement. This cutting-edge technology involves a special camera to give Dr. Samadian a 3D view of your soft tissue, jawbone, and surrounding teeth. It provides real time guidance to strategically set your dental implant at the proper depth, angle, and position, most often without the need for incisions or stitches. The XGuide navigational implant placement is the most advanced technology in the world to minimize post-surgery discomfort and improve your implant’s positioning.

What Recovery Can I Expect?

Dr. Samadian takes your comfort into consideration, using the most advanced techniques, such as flapless surgery, guided surgery, and XGuide navigational placement alongside different types of sedation, so your implants look and fit better. With detailed aftercare instructions, your chances of complication are significantly minimized, as is your discomfort. You shouldn’t experience any pain during the procedure, and you’ll receive pain management medications and advice as needed. You should drink plenty of water and avoid hot or cold foods or drinks. Ice packs to reduce swelling and pain, as well as biting gauze padding may also help.

The end result is a restored tooth that functions fully, is cared for as normal, and cannot be distinguished from your other teeth.
