CAMBRA Protocol

Stop cavities in their tracks

Cavities, also called caries, are damaged areas in the hard surface of your teeth that turn into tiny holes or openings. They are often the result of poor dental hygiene, bacteria in your mouth, your diet and constituents of your saliva, your immune system or medications.

Dr. Amin Samadian uses the Caries Management by Risk Assessment (or CAMBRA) protocol as part of his preventative dentistry to manage caries. The goal of the CAMBRA protocol is to evaluate your risk for caries and determine the appropriate preventive and therapeutic treatments to prevent and also reverse dental decay.

CAMBRA Protocol Orinda

What is the CAMBRA protocol?

Developed by UCSF school of dentistry after almost two decades of studies, also known as an evidence-based protocol, CAMBRA is intended to prevent, reverse, and/or treat caries before they lead to permanent tooth damage. This cavity prevention treatment considers the entire caries disease process rather than solely its progression. Instead of placing an emphasis on restorative care, just like Dr. Samadian’s practice, CAMBRA focuses on early intervention and prevention.

Reasons for the CAMBRA protocol

Dr. Amin Samadian is a strong advocate of the CAMBRA protocol because it’s a great way for his patients to prevent cavities as well as achieve and maintain optimal oral health. Prevention is always better than correction.

What does the CAMBRA protocol involve?

During the CAMBRA protocol, Dr. Amin Samadian uses a scale of 0 to 5 to assess your risk level for caries based on the bacterial activity of the saliva, the ph of the saliva and the clinical evidence of decay, history of dental and medical treatments, and other risks associated with decay (medications, habits, nutrition, etc.). Once your risk level has been determined, he will design the ideal treatment plan. If you are at high risk for caries, his plan will likely revolve around treating the bacterial infection that may be causing them and prevent them from recurring.

Is the CAMBRA protocol painful?

The CAMBRA protocol does not lead to any pain. You will simply sit back in your chair and allow Dr. Amin Samadian and his team of experts to evaluate your risk level for cavities.

What results will I see?

With this cavity prevention treatment, you can expect to reduce your risk of cavities and improve your overall oral health.
