Traditional dentures rest on the gums and depend on tissue and bone for support. Overdentures or implant-supported dentures, however, feature special attachments that snap onto dental implants that have been placed strategically in the bone for support.
Dr. Amin Samadian often recommends implant-supported dentures to his patients because they can better preserve the bone around the missing teeth, remove the need for denture adhesives, and allow for easier chewing and eating. It also prevents bone loss, which is a common side effect of conventional dentures.
An overdenture is a denture arch that is supported by dental implants that are surgically implanted into your jawbone. It may be retained by balls, bars, or screws.
Since overdentures use dental implants for support, they are far more stable than traditional dentures, which are held by adhesive. Therefore, Dr. Amin Samadian likes to recommend them to his patients who would like a more comfortable alternative to traditional dentures. It may be a viable treatment if you no longer have teeth in your mouth, but enough bone to support implants. Overdentures can always evolve into All on Four implant-supported hybrid dentures that are fixed dentures that screw into the implants and serve completely like normal teeth.

During the overdenture procedure, Dr. Amin Samadian will place implants under your gum line inside the jaw bone, which will act as anchors that your new set of teeth can attach to. Once they are firmly in place (which takes 2-4 months), he will the snap in your dentures to the implants. You’ll find that with these implants, you won’t have to worry about your dentures falling out or bringing you any discomfort.
Since the overdenture procedure is performed under general anesthesia, there won’t be any pain or discomfort.
Once you’ve received overdentures, you’ll enjoy a durable and natural replacement for your missing teeth. You’ll have the peace of mind of knowing your teeth will be secure regardless of how active you are. In addition, you’ll be able to avoid dentures rubbing against your gums and causing irritation.
