Leave jaw pain and tension behind you

The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is a jaw joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. Trauma from a heavy bite or biting muscles that are too strong may strain the TMJ and lead to acute or chronic facial pain. This condition is known as temporomandibular disorder or TMD.

TMD also causes severe headaches, jaw pain of varying degrees, grinding teeth, and an intermittent ringing in the ears. If you are suffering from TMJ pain, you should know that Dr. Amin Samadian offers treatments for TMJ/TMD that may help you find the relief you deserve.

TMJ Treatment Orinda

What Treatments are Available for TMJ/TMD?

BOTOX® for TMJ/TMD

Botox® is a brand name for a substance that features botulinum toxin, a purified chemical that derives from bacteria. When it is injected into certain facial muscles, it can temporarily relieve TMJ and jaw tension.

Dr. Amin Samadian may recommend Botox® for TMJ following his examination of your pain points as part of his comprehensive, holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment. Botox® for TMJ may be a viable treatment option in combination with anti-inflammatory drugs, gentle stretches of the jaw and neck, and stress reduction techniques. Also, Dr. Samadian may prescribe a custom nightguard that will put the TMJ in a comfortable position and alleviate your symptoms.

Laser TMJ Bio-Stimulation

Laser TMJ treatment uses a patented combination of wavelengths to treat TMJ. While one wavelength reduces inflammation, the other one relieves pain. It’s so effective because it increases cellular energy and can allow your tissues to absorb nutrients at a more rapid rate while increasing blood circulation. It is a great way to treat the discomfort that often comes with TMJ without surgery or negative side effects.

TMJ laser treatment may be recommended if you’re living with TMD and have not found relief through other treatments or would like to avoid the harsh side effects that often come with TMJ medications.

What does TMJ/TMD treatment involve?

If Dr. Samadian recommends BOTOX® treatment, after careful examination of the muscles and the TMJ itself, Dr. Amin Samadian using a fine needle will inject Botox® into the muscles that lead to jaw pain and headaches. It is a non-invasive treatment that can be completed in 30 minutes or less and comes with no downtime.

For Laser TMJ Bio-Stimulation, you’ll rest in a chair while Dr. Samadian uses a special system with two wavelengths to perform the treatment. You can expect these wavelengths to pinpoint and block the source of pain and promote cellular repair and growth. This treatment typically only takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Is TMJ/TMD treatment painful?

The pain associated with the Botox® TMJ Treatment procedure is due to the injections, but it is generally minimal and brief. Some patients have likened the Botox® injection pain to that of a “bug bite” or “prick”. Pain from the injection can be reduced by numbing proposed injection sites with a cold pack or anesthetic cream.

TMJ Bio-Stimulation is non-invasive and leads to minimal pain or discomfort.

What results will I see?

While most BOTOX® patients experience notable improvement in their TMJ pain within one or two days of their first treatment, it can take up to two weeks for you to enjoy optimal relief. BOTOX® for TMJ is a temporary treatment, so results will fade away in about a year. Bio-stimulation, on the other hand, requires 2-3 treatments, but results will be long-lasting once the treatments are complete.

It’s important to emphasize that Dr. Samadian will take a holistic look at everything that is causing the TMJ issue, such as jaw asymmetries, bite misalignment, malocclusion, etc. and will treat you as a whole person rather than just focusing on the symptom which by itself is just a result, not the actual cause.
